When it was first announced that Netflix was working on a series based on The Witcher, which would star actor Henry Cavill as the titular Geralt of Rivia, many fans of both the games and the novels were excited at the prospect of seeing a world they love come to life on the small screen. Now, Netflix has released the first footage of the actor as the lead character.
The teaser trailer sees the actor stepping out of the darkness and finally revealing what he looks like as Geralt. He then ends of the teaser by gulping down what seems to be one of the various potions a Witcher has at his disposal in order to increase his senses. Over the years, there have been many iterations of Geralt and it seems that Netflix has decided to go with the clean shaven version from the novels rather than the scruffy one we’ve seen in recent games.
For those not familiar with the character, Geralt of Rivia is one of a group of monster hunters, known as Witchers, who have enhanced abilities, thanks to continual training and body modifications. They are very rarely liked by the general populace and only tolerated because of their unique talents to slay giant beasts of both the natural and supernatural kind.
Of course, Twitter has already begun to give their opinion on Cavill’s look with some even comparing it to Orlando Bloom’s Legolas in the Lord of the Rings films and Christopher Lambert’s Raiden in the classic Mortal Kombat film. It seems that most fans are unimpressed.
What do you think of The Witcher? Does Cavill pull it off or is it too early to judge?
