Although many fans were upset that filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, Elysium and Chappie, was no longer making his Alien sequel, they’d be happy to see his latest work in the new Oats Studios project. In a video simply titled ‘Oats Studios “Volume 1” Teaser Trailer’, we get a look at some of his experimental sci-fi shorts.
The upcoming short films will be featured on the studio’s YouTube channel and the Steam streaming service as well. The 70-second teaser for Studios: Volume 1 features a unique shape-shifting monster and appearances by Alien‘s Sigourney Weaver and Dakota Fanning.
Here’s what the director had to say:
“Maybe with volume 1, it could be entirely free. Which means #oatsstudios YouTube page is where to get extras like 3D models / Vfx assets/ concept art/ all the raw footage / all music etc., maybe on steam for a nominal price. If people like… Hopefully, pay for volume 2. Or go to theatres to see feature adapted from one of the shorter films.”
Blomkamp famously got his start by directing short films, including Tetra Vaal, Alive in Joburg, Yellow and Tempbot. However, it was his 2007 short Halo: Landfall that gotten the attention of Hollywood.
