Movie 43 was an anthology comedy that followed 14 different storylines, each with a completely different director. The script was rejected several times before Relativity Media picked it up. It was called “the Citizen Kane of awful” and even won an award for Worst Picture. The film was pitched and produced by Charlie Wessler, who wanted to create a modern comedy reminiscent of classic wacky anthology films. Wessler later noted that his love for comedy variety shows influenced the script. Today, Movie 43 remains one of the worst comedy sketches ever made, and its production was as chaotic as the film itself.

Why is Movie 43 so Bad?
Poor Writing and Unfunny
The film’s problems start with the fact that each sketch was written by people with no writing experience, much less comedy writing experience, which was apparent in every sketch. Jim Vorel, a connoisseur of terrible movies, said, “The sketches of Movie 43 all feel like rejects that a particularly zealous and immature writer tried and failed to get onto Mad TV, or the last 30 minutes of an SNL episode when most of the audience had already gone to bed.”
There’s nothing notably funny about the film. One review on IMDB describes the humour as “something kindergarten students would make up, hell, kindergarten students aren’t even this immature.” Another described it as “a bunch of random skits that go nowhere without a punchline or purpose. It’s stupid, offensive, unfunny, painful, and pointless.”
The jokes were lazy and stretched out across an entire segment. “Every one of them just establishes an extraordinarily lazy joke right away and then never deviates from it,” Vorel commented while talking with Kenneth Lowe about the catastrophic failure that was Movie 43.

Directors’ Lack of Control
Many of the directors involved in the project were significantly more professional than the writers who wrote the scripts, and even they couldn’t liven up the screenplays they’d been given.
James Gunn directed Beezel, one of the more disturbing sketches centred around a cat’s love for his owner, and was excited to talk about the sketch back in 2011 and how the producers had insisted he make it grosser. Now he only despises how his segment turned out. He lost control of it during post-production and has never seen the final cut of his work.
It doesn’t help that all the meddling and micro-managing resulted in absolutely nothing. As a result, there is nothing remotely enjoyable about the film, and those who did enjoy it had to be incredibly inebriated before the movie pulled a laugh out of them.

Stars Who Couldn’t Escape
The film boasts a star-studded cast, and people still question how Wessler managed to get so many talented actors involved in his project. During an interview with NYPost, Peter Farrelly, one of four producers, stated, “They clearly wanted out! But we wouldn’t let them.” Instead, the producers would “Wait for them”, “Shoot when they want to shoot”, and “Guilt them to death.”
- Movie 43 is still the worst film ever created after ten years.
- The poor writing was unfunny and couldn’t even be saved by professional directors.
- Many of the film’s stars wanted to escape but couldn’t.
