Just when you thought there couldn’t be any more editions of Monopoly that can be released, news drops of two new editions heading to a store shelf near you.
Monopoly, A game most of us grew up playing, has gone through various iterations over the years. The latest of these is the Monopoly Gamer edition.
The Monopoly Gamer edition has me most excited and follows the same basic premise of the original game but with a few twists. Firstly, the cat, dog and other familiar tokens are gone. Instead, they are replaced by absolutely cute Nintendo characters. Yes, that’s right, the Monopoly Gamer edition takes a group of Nintendo characters we love and plops them in the middle of a Nintendo themed Monopoly board. While this sounds like it just shouldn’t work, the game introduces some new mechanics that set it apart from the original version.
Players are tasked with racing around the board collecting coins (money) and completing levels (buying property) using character tokens such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach and Yoshi. What changes up the tried and tested formula is the fact that each of these characters has their own unique power-up ability, which adds a welcome new layer of strategy to the game. These abilities can be triggered by either a dice roll or by landing on a specific space on the board.
Players will also be able to expand their Monopoly Gamer edition by purchasing additional Power Packs, which will include one of several Nintendo characters including Luigi, Wario and Boo.
If you are a gamer and love Nintendo (and let’s be honest who doesn’t), this seems like the perfect gift for you.
The second new edition includes a whole new set of tokens as voted by 4.3 million fans of the board game. Gone are some of the more boring tokens, such as the thimble and shoe (whoever wants to be the shoe?). They are replaced by a Scottie Dog, a T-Rex, Top Hat, Car, Rubber Duck, Cat, Penguin and Battleship. Personally, I could never see myself playing as anything else but the T-Rex ever again.
Monopoly is here to stay. It seems that the classic board game and its various iterations are gaining more fans each year.
These editions will be available at participating retailers including, Takelot.com, Toys R Us, Hamleys and Lilliputs.
