E3 2019 was a big deal for Microsoft, who have been lagging behind Sony with regards to exclusives and console sales this generation. With Sony not present at this year’s E3, it was Microsft’s time to shine, and shine they did.
Microsoft made quite a few announcements, some expected and some coming out of the left field. Some of these announcements include the next generation Xbox console, a release date for Cyberpunk 2077 (and guess what? Keanu Reeves is in it), and, of course, a whole slew of new game announcements.
Here are some of the biggest reveals to come out of the Microsoft E3 2019 Conference.
The Next Xbox and Halo Infinite – It’s finally coming!
While it was expected that Microsoft would reveal more about their next-gen console, it still came as a pleasant surprise when Head of Xbox Phil Spencer revealed more about the mysterious console codenamed Scarlet. While Spencer did make it clear that the console’s official name hasn’t been decided upon yet, it is coming and it will be powerful, four times more powerful than the current generation of consoles to be exact.
The console will include a built-in SSD which doubles as virtual RAM and graphics capabilities that will allow for 120fps at 8K resolution. The console will also be backwards compatible, allowing four generations of games to be played on it.
The Scarlet will launch in 2020.
As an added bonus, the latest Halo game, titled Halo Infinite will launch alongside the console. Microsoft also released a new cinematic trailer for the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 – Is that Keanu Reeves?!
While fans of developer CD Projekt Red were expecting more Cyberpunk 2077, they did not expect to see Keanu Reeves at the conference. Yes, that’s right, the actor will be playing a part in the highly anticipated upcoming game.
If that wasn’t enough of a surprise, we also got a release date for the game along with a new cinematic trailer.
The game is set for release on the 16th of April 2020, which is much sooner than we anticipated.
Elden Ring – From Software and George RR Martin Joins Forces
It seems the leaks were indeed true. Writer George R.R. Martin and From Software are developing a brand new game together called Elden Ring.
As previously mentioned, the game will be an open-world game and will see players exploring various kingdoms. Unlike some of From Software’s previous games, Elden Ring will be more RPG focused, but will still have the responsive melee-combat that the developer is known for.
No Release date has been revealed yet.
Battletoads – The toads are back!
Rash, Pimple and Zitz are back and looking better than ever in a new beat-em-up. The new Battletoads game will have hand-drawn visuals, which just looks gorgeous and will support up to three-player couch co-op.
Forza Horizon 4 LEGO DLC – LEGO Racing is here
Just when you thought Forza Horizon couldn’t get any better, Microsoft announced that a LEGO DLC will be heading to the game.
Basically a mix of LEGO and racing cars, this DLC promises to bring out your inner child.
Borderlands 3 – Oh, Hi Lilith
A brand new Borderlands 3 trailer was shown during the Microsoft conference featuring Lilith. We also get to see the vault hunters in action. Git was also revealed that some new DLC titled Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary is now available for Borderlands 2, for free.
The DLC will connect the second game with the upcoming third and get players psyched for the next game’s release.
Gears of War 5 – Here’s a brand new mode
Rod Fergusson from The Coalition showed off a brand new mode for Gears of War 5 called Escape. Basically, a three-player co-op mode will see players infiltrating a Hive nest, planting a bomb and then having to get the heck out of there without dying.
The game is set for a release on the 10th of September 2019.
Psychonauts 2 – Double Fine and Xbox combine
Another surprise from Microsoft’s E3 2019 event was the announcement that Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine Productions, headed up by the amazing Tim Schaefer, will now be part of Xbox Game Studios. This is great news for Xbox owners as the studio is known for developing weird, wacky and memorable games.
We also got to see more of their upcoming sequel to Psychonauts which made us even more excited for the game’s release.
