Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) is expanding its roster of characters. Madam Web joins the shared universe alongside Venom, Morbius and Kraven The Hunter. Sony’s new Madame Web teaser trailer looks like a superhero mash-up with Final Destination.

Dakota Johnson stars as Manhattan Paramedic Cassandra Webb/Madame Web. Cassandra is a clairvoyant and precognitive mutant who can see into the future. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined to become Spider-Women if they can all survive a deadly attack from the mysterious Ezekial Sims.
Madame Web
For many fans of the character, the definitive version of Madame Web was in the Spider-Man animated series from the 90’s. In the acclaimed series, Cassandra was voiced by Stan Lee’s wife, Joan Boocock Lee. The comics and the animated series feature an older Cassandra, born blind and paralyzed. Madame Web has extraordinary telepathic abilities which allow her to read minds, see the future and project her astral form outside her body.
The Web of Life and Destiny Connects To The MCU?

“This is the Web of Reality. Every reality. Every possible future. I see them all, judging which is most likely to come to pass.”—Madame Web.

The Web of Life and Destiny is part of the larger Spider-Man mythos. It is a construct of reality that connects all Spider-Men and Spider-Women across the Multiverse, allowing them to travel between realities. Madame Web has the unique ability to tap into the Web of Life and Destiny.
Sony and Marvel may use Madame Web as a gateway to connect the various franchises like the Spiderverse, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the MCU together. In the film, Cassandra is portrayed as a younger version of the character. Young Cassandra is still learning to control her powers and may only discover later that she can travel between realities, connecting all the Spider-People across the Multiverse.
Spider-Women

The new Madame Web film will introduce various other Spider-Women. Sydney Sweeney will appear as Spider-Woman Julia Carpenter, Celeste O’Connor is Mattie Franklin and Isabela Morced as Arana. The film’s plot shows that the women are unaware that they will become Spider-Women in the future. Cassandra’s powers help her find and protect them from a type of Spider-Man, who seems to be Ezekial Sims. In the comics, Ezekial has all the powers of Spider-Man, which he received from a Spider Totem.

Superheroes meets Final Destination meets The Marvels.

Madame Web’s trailer felt like an updated version of Final Destination. Cassandra’s visions of calamity and ensuing doom mimic the premise of the famous horror film by James Wong. It also felt like you were watching The Marvels. Weirdly, the trailer felt like a crossover: a group of young female heroes tag team together while trying to stay alive by avoiding hazardous pitfalls and attacks guided by a clairvoyant telepath.
Sony is forging ahead with their Spider-Man Universe and placing Madame Web in the middle. Morbius’s failure dented Sony’s plans, but Venom is still going strong at the box office despite negative reviews from critics. Sony is creating a parallel Multiverse Saga alongside the MCU, who have Doctor Strange to navigate the perils of the Multiverse, and Sony now has their own Doctor Strange in Madame Web.
Madame Web will be released on 26 February 2024.
