A keyboard goes hand in hand with your PC, or laptop. But when was the last time you actually cleaned it? Although a quick wipe over the keys might seem to do the trick, there’s still a bit of dirt and dust that lies beneath the surface. A few weeks ago, Logitech announced its new washable keyboard, the K310. The plug-n-play K310 keyboard, thus, can be submersed in water and washed as you would your dishes. The keyboard is also hazard proof, which protects your keyboard from everyday spills.

The K310, although washable, is easy to clean in the dry thanks to the modern design. The keys aren’t embedded into the frame, which doesn’t allow dirt to get trapped beneath the keys. In addition, the keyboard also has laser printed keys, which have all been UV coated for further germ protection. The body is able to be submerged in up to 30cm of water, and also has drainage holes to allow for easier draining and drying. Also included is a cleaning brush, which allows you to clean around and beneath the keys.

For those who may not see much value in a washable keyboard, here’s a perspective of what you encounter on a daily basis. A study conducted a few years ago found that the average keyboard (desktop or laptop) contains up to 150 times the recommended limit of bacteria both on and beneath the keys. This means that the average keyboard is 5 times as dirty as the average public toilet seat.

The only downfall with the K310 is that it isn’t wireless, and uses USB cable instead, which has to clear of any water while washing. We can only hope that Logitech will release both a wireless and gaming versions of the washable keyboard. The Logitech Washable K310 Keyboard is available at Incredible Connection at a recommended retail price of R599.99, although you can find slightly reduced prices with a quick shop-around. With all said and done, the K310 is a really good keyboard, which is comfortable to use and easy to clean (both dry and under the tap). A wireless receiver would truly make this device a must-have.
