The hype surrounding the next generation of consoles has been building to a fever pitch, and with new leaks and rumours suggesting Sony might announce the PS5 early next year, eager fans have been anxiously awaiting any scrap of news that gets leaked. The most recent leak might actually give us our first look at Sony’s next console.
The leaked patent was registered by Sony on the 13th of August, although it was applied for back in May. The patent is for a ‘generic electronic device’ with a unique ‘V’ shape.
The speculation that this could be a patent for the PS5 is fueled by the fact that the ‘V’ is the Roman numeral for ‘5’. The device also features what could be a large power button at the front and an opening for inserting a disc or some other form of physical media.
As with most gaming devices, such as gaming laptops, the console has a ton of vents, probably to make sure that all those high-end components stay nice and cool.
As the leaked patent spread across the Internet, game developer Matthew Stott seemingly confirmed that this was indeed how the design of the dev kits from Sony looked like that was sent to various developers. According to Stott’s LinkedIn page, he is a senior artist at Codemasters.
For those already getting excited or disgusted by the unique ‘V’ shaped design, it’s important to note that, if the leaked patent is real, it could very well just be a patent for the dev kits and not the final console which may have a more refined final look.
As with all leaks, this should be taken with a grain of salt until it is confirmed by Sony. If it does prove true its a radical departure from the vanilla PS4 design and could be an indication that Sony is planning to mix things up this generation.
