Set amidst the beautiful Stellenbosch winelands, the classic setting for a fairy tale wedding, Konfetti proves simultaneously hilarious and tragic.
Jean Voster and Sherryl Lieberman’s relationship forms under rather unfortunate circumstances. At a New Years Eve party broken heartedly Sherryl runs from her boyfriend Lukas after finding him in bed with another woman. She finds herself in the arms of close friend Jean and, in an attempt to make Lukas jealous, kisses his best friend. That kiss lead to wedding bells months later. So it seems something good came from something bad… or so it seems.
Lukas is the best man. He has taken it upon himself to arrange and pay for a lot of the wedding as his gift to Jean and Sherryl. Already warning signs flicker as it is a uncomfortable situation seeing your ex marry your best friend. Nevertheless, Lukas really tries to give them the perfect day. Dealing with tension among family members, Jean’s side is middle class Afrikaans Christian and Sherryl’s side are pompous English Jews. The rings are being flown in, but flights have been delayed and the couple bringing them get hopelessly lost. As if that isn’t enough, the band cancels last minute and Lukas takes the first band available, only to reveal that the singer is Bianca, the very girl Lukas cheated on Sherryl with.
A lot of ups and downs, laughs and shocks. Konfetti is an emotional rollercoaster for any viewer. Filled with all the typical local humour and antics the masses know and love. However, this time you can’t help but root for chaos as the cracks reveal a sweet twist.
Louw Venter explained that the conceptualization for Konfetti dates back 8 years and presented it with pride, alongside director Zaheer Goodman-Bhyat, at the Cape Town premiere screened at Canal Walk, Century City. It was indeed a celebrating atmosphere as all invited had to dress up in wedding themed clothes. So among the wedding dresses and champagne, we saw the preview of what South African audiences can expect when Konfetti officially gets released on 18 April 2014.
But it doesn’t stop in SA, Konfetti has been included in this years International Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, where Casey B Dolan is nominated for best actress. Both festivals take place in the United States, from 23 – 27 April 2014.
