With the release of the highly-anticipated film upon us, there couldn’t be a better time for fans to brush up on their Justice League knowledge or dive into the wondrous details of the expansive and immersive world of the characters. Of course, DK Publishing has put together a compressive fun-to-thumb hardcover book to run you through the complicated history of the famed superhero team and its members. With its compelling structure, which is well-balanced with information and vivid imagery, between the covers Justice League: The Ultimate Guide details everything from their initial appearance back in the ’60s up to their current form in the Rebirth era of comic books. If you have an unquenchable love for all things DC, this is another must-have.
Not unlike the recent Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Warrior book, Justice League: The Ultimate Guide attempts to condense 60 years of stories into a single volume of roughly 200 well-designed pages. It’s no easy task, but writer Landry Q. Walker has a long history of putting these insightful tomes together. Celebrating the League remains the core of the book as it delves into details about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern and the many other members who have come and gone over the years. Beginning with a foreword by J.M. DeMatteis, who wrote many of the amazing Justice League International comic titles in the ’80s, the visual dictionary then begins to present the beloved heroes and villains associated with the team one-by-one across a double page spread. We are given relevant info about characters’ alternate history, statistics, a brief origin story and a character bio. While you might know everything there is to know about the main team, it’s the unfamiliar characters that are really interesting here.
The amazing thing about these Dorling Kindersley large-format reference books is that, thanks to the sumptuous artwork and the easily digestible format, even the laziest of readers will be able to scroll through the book and not get bored. If you’re looking for a well-balanced, compressed and outlined coffee table book, whether as a refresher or for a deeper understanding of the Justice League, this one is for you. Again, highly recommended!
