JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions have collaborated on a new 10-episode HBO horror-fantasy drama series. Lovecraft Country, which is based on Matt Rufus’ 2016 dark fantasy novel of the same, mixes Lovecraftian horror with the racism of 19th century America.
Starring a number of popular actors, including Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Jonathan Majors, the trailer promises a big budget production with lots of scares. Fans of Jordan Peele-styled horror should know what to expect.
The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
