We all knew it was coming. Now, Logan director James Mangold has confirmed that he is already working on a spin-off featuring Dafne Keen‘s Laura, aka X-23.
“We’re just working on a script,” Mangold told The Hollywood Reporter in a lengthy interview.
The director goes on to credit the success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman as inspiration:
“Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”
Producer Hutch Parker also suggested that fans shouldn’t expect a similar film to Logan:
“It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opening up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe.”
Of course, the spin-off will in no way involve Hugh Jackman, who has confirmed over and over again that he will not be involved with the franchise moving forward:
“No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel. But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though. She is just phenomenal.”
Logan broke the mould for superhero films. It would be interesting to see if an X-23 spin-off continues to revolutionise the genre.
