Just when you thought you’d seen the last of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Terminator, James Cameron has an idea that could offer a better premise than all the previous sequels to Terminator 2.
Seriously, why did Cameron allow the studios to butcher his franchise this way? He clearly understands the material better than anyone else does. Thankfully, the film rights will revert to Cameron in 2019 and Schwarzenegger has already confirmed that the team behind T2 will return for a new movie.
A fan site, The Arnold Fans, caught up with Cameron who revealed a possible plot of the next film:
“You got to ask yourself, ‘Why did they make these characters look and sound like Arnold?’ There has to be a reason. So yeah, it has flashed through my mind that there has to have been a prototype. There has to have been a guy whose DNA was harvested from – that they grew the organic outer layer… that they grew the Terminator from… and that presumably was a real person at some point.”
You have’ta admit, that’s a good question and would make for an interesting premise for a follow-up film. It makes total sense.
Now, the question is, did that person have some sort of meaning to Skynet on why they chose that one? Or was it like a whole rack of Terminators and the one that happened to be the Arnold model just happened to be closest to the door going out to the time displacement centre and all the others looked different? I’ve asked myself these questions but it’s never been resolved. So stay tuned! We’re talking pretty seriously now about doing some new Terminator films or possibly a trilogy and you’ll just have to see what surfaces in those.”
While fans might still feel burned by recent Terminator films and would prefer that the series discontinues, Cameron might be the right person to save the franchise from doom. Everyone loved the first two films and Arnie could do with a few more of those.
