With the Dance of Dragons in full swing now, the time for peace in Westeros as we know it in House of the Dragonis formally over. Remember those scenes in Season 1 where the entire Targaryen clan shared a table and ate dinner together? Forget that going into Season 2. Now, it’s time for war. And Dragons. If the recent leak tells us anything, House of the Dragon season 2 is going to be good.
As has always been the norm for shows like House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, leaked set pics are a source of valuable info for fans hungry to know more about what’s going to happen in the upcoming season. So far, the leaks haven’t disappointed, revealing key plot points like the visit to the North and some location shots that could belong to Rook’s Rest. That last location will play a pivotal role this season, as it is the background for one of the earliest battles in the Targaryen civil conflict.
Rook’s Rest, in particular, seems to be the focus of many fans in the House of the Dragon community. As the site of the first major battle in the Dance of Dragons, Rook’s Rest is also the place where a beloved character will meet their end come the show’s second season – at least, going by the source material.
Rhaenyra Suffers a Major Casualty
Throughout the series, Rhaenyra found in Rhaenys a counsellor, supporter, and friend who stood by her side through thick and thin. She was one of the first Targaryens to openly support Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne, becoming an invaluable asset to the Black faction in the Dance of Dragons.
Still, if the leaked set pics are to be believed, everything seems to indicate that Rhaenys will meet her fate in Season 2 of House of the Dragon. The only problem is that Rhaenys’ death, even in the books, isn’t easy to discern amid Rook’s Rest battlefield.
Even in the books, Rhaenys’ body is never officially “found.” What they found was a charred corpse lying in a fetal position next to Rhaenys’ mount, Meleys. There was no way to identify the corpse, but, seeing as the figure lay next to Meleys, there was little to no doubt that it was the corpse of Rhaenys Targaryen.
The leaked set photos show multiple charred bodies, but fans fixed on one in particular that seems to be a dead ringer to some House of the Dragon official art depicting Rhaenys’ demise. The body also appears to be in a fetal position, even if Meleys is nowhere to be found.
While the dragons in the series are always added in post-production, there are at least some traces of blue screen left for the actors to know where the creatures are supposed to be. There were no traces of a blue screen of any sort near Rhaenys’ presumed corpse, but, seeing as it’s just a prop, maybe the showrunners didn’t need the blue screen for this scene.
Still, it’s too early to tell if this is, in fact, Rhaenys’ body. That said, Rook’s Rest is a particularly violent clash between the Targaryen factions – one that will see significant losses on each side. If there’s one thing that both the teaser trailer and the leaked set photos have proved, it is that this season might very well feature House of the Dragon‘s very own Battle of the Bastards. Only with many more dragons, for good measure.

His favourite film is RoboCop, but he also has a soft spot for cheesy 80s horror flicks and anything made by Wes Anderson.
