Hulu recently released a trailer for their latest dark comedy-drama series, Obituary, and the dark comedy series is about to take the world by storm with its witty but morbid humour about a young woman who is an obituary writer and how she deals with work drying up in her small English town. Interested? Let’s take a look at Obituary.
Elvira Clancy is a 24-year-old young woman who makes a living by writing obituaries for her local paper in a small town in Ireland, and while she loves her job, it hasn’t fulfilled her. Overnight, it seems that business in her small town has become so slow that it could be crawling, and the newspaper where she works isn’t able to keep her on the payroll full-time but is willing to pay her for each obituary she writes. Realising that she could starve without death in her town, Elvira has a moment of chilling inspiration.
Elvira ends up “accidentally” killing someone in town who has been a nuisance, described as a “nasty piece of work”, and discovers that, while having a death to write about really does help her get by, she also has an untapped bloodlust that she can harness. She finds that she feels more fulfilled than ever. She uses her creativity to take care of some of the more unpleasant residents in her little town while using more and more crafty methods to take care of each person and make them look like accidents or natural causes.

Elvira’s plans have a sudden hitch when the paper she works for hires a new crime reporter who likes to uncover conspiracy theories and might have a real shot at figuring out the cause behind the sudden string of mysterious deaths happening in her town. Elvira realises that she might have to deal with him to keep her secret and livelihood safe, and she wouldn’t have an issue with it if she didn’t find him so darn cute…
Obituary takes an unusual stance, taking the killer’s point of view as opposed to what we often see from the point of view of the victim or the small-town detective or journalist tasked with uncovering the mystery. The unconventional romance, dark comedy hybrid was brought to life by directors John Hayes and Oonah Kearney with the help of producer Nell Green and screenwriter Ray Lawlor, who came together to bring this killer funny story to life.
The star-studded cast consists of Conan Sweeny as Donal the Barman, Danielle Galligan as Mallory Markum, David Ganly as Hughie Burns, Evanne Kilgallon as Kate Cunniffe, Lalor Roddy as Clive Cavendish, Michael Hough as Tom Quigley, Michael Smiley as Ward Clancy, Noni Stapleton as Garda Rose Mulcahy, Ronan Raftery as Emerson Stafford, and the leading lady, Siobhan Cullen as Elvira Clancy.
