With the official confirmation of Goblin Slayer season 2, fans continue to await the premiere, speculating what the plotline has in store for them.
As many fans already know, the anime (which has an English dub produced by Funimation) is based on the light novels by Kumo Kagyu and Noboru Kannatsuki. The first season was produced by Studio White Fox and globally aired on Crunchyroll. This fantastical yet dark-themed anime is quite similar to RPGs and isekai anime primarily due to its premise that revolves around adventurers undertaking quests and defeating different monsters for gold and fame.
Goblin Slayer kicked off with a protagonist (inspired by comic book characters like Batman and the Punisher) who experiences the annihilation of his entire family by hordes of goblins.
With a burning passion to eradicate every living breathing goblin in his world, the first season begins with the Goblin Slayer forming a small team comprised of some quite intriguing characters. This includes a newbie Priestess, an agile High Elf Archer, a Dwarf Shaman, as well as a Priest from the Lizard race. The team sets out to defeat a group of goblins and their Gobling Lord, who is quite intelligent for his race.
Needless to say, Goblin Slayer mainly gained traction from a controversial standpoint. Just the first episode itself was enough to stir the fanbase and journalists, portraying a scene where a fellow adventurer of the young priestess gets raped.
Following the end of the first season, the animators decided to air the Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown movie in 2020, with a follow-up for a possible second season.
The official announcement for Goblin Slayer season 2 was made in GA FES 2021 in a Livestream event hosted by the light novel publishing house responsible for publishing the light novels — GA Bunko.
Moreover, the team also publicly released posters and a teaser for the second season, with the exception of an official release date for the anime. However, we speculate that the anime will be airing sometime later this year or early 2022.
Since this is an anime adaptation of the original light novels, viewers can expect Goblin Slayer season 2 to pick up from where season 1 left off (which ended with the message that the “Goblin Slayer would return”).
While it may not be possible to completely discern what we might be getting, we can deduce that since the first season covered the entirety of events leading up to the 4th volume, and the 5th volume was covered by the movie, it is quite probable to state that season 2 of Goblin Slayer will definitely carry on from the 6th volume of the light novel series and onwards.
Of course, the animators and scriptwriters do have the authority to change the plot and present a different take on the series.
Regardless, if you have yet to watch the first season then we highly recommend doing so right now. Now would be the right time to get into it.
The Goblin Slayer light novel series is written by Kumo Kagyu and illustrated by Noboru Kannatsuki.
The synopsis for the second season reads: It’s fall, and the village’s harvest festival is underway. The adventurers spend the time in their own ways: Priestess busy with her duties at the temple, High Elf Archer pouting over a certain turn of events, and Dwarf Shaman and Lizard Priest helping with festival preparations. Goblin Slayer also spends the days without incident, but what is lurking behind the dwindling requests to exterminate goblins, his three visitors, and the upcoming festival?
