Sucker Punch Productions (the Infamous and Sly Cooper developers) have released a brand new Ghost of Tsushima gameplay trailer that gives us a more in-depth look at the island players will be able to explore in the final game. The footage takes us on a quick tour of the open-world, showing off some of its breathtaking vistas.
According to the developer, it was important to entice and motivate players to explore every part of the island. However, the challenge was to do this in a way that felt natural and doesn’t include a bunch of obtrusive waypoints, for instance.
One way the developer is using the island itself to guide players is by using the wind which will blow in the direction of a player’s waypoint marker. It’s a way of helping players find their way without breaking immersion.
What it all boils down to is that Sucker Punch is using all manner of visual cues to guide players in Ghost of Tsushima. These cues include smokestacks, interesting changes in the landscape or even the islands furry inhabitants. In the trailer, for instance, a yellow bird indicates a character sitting next to the road that players can interact with.
It also seems that crafting will plate a large part in Ghost of Tsushima. All through the trailer, Jin Sakai, the game’s main protagonist, picks up various raw materials, which would possibly be used to craft all manner of items and gear.
This customised armour is not just cosmetic. It will give the character different mechanical advantages in-game.
If that’s not enough, a black-and-white, film grain mode can be switched on to emulate classic samurai films.
