Earlier today, news broke that a vigilant Reddit user spotted a Target retail listing for a Game of Thrones game developed by Bethesda. But just as quickly as the rumour popped up, it was shot down by Target.
The leaked listing didn’t reveal much beyond the words Bethesda: Game of Thrones. Of course, many were sceptic about this news and rightly so as it is possible to fake URLs, which might be the case here.
A Target spokesperson also quickly confirmed to Forbes that this was indeed not a real product. “This is not a real product – we’re sorry for any confusion.”
What may also have hinted to the leaked image being a hoax is the fact that Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard told EGM back in 2011 that they were approached to develop a game based on the Game of Thrones books even before making Skyrim. The team decided to turn down the offer as they wanted to focus their energy towards making their own games.
This does not mean that we might never see a Bethesda developed Game of Thrones game, especially since Todd Howard also revealed in the same interview that the idea of developing a game based on the A Song of Ice And Fire universe was very tempting.
Who knows maybe our dreams might come true, eventually. Until then all we can do is hope.
What do you think? Would Bethesda be the perfect developer to develop an open-world Game of Thrones game?
