It’s the end of another year, and with that comes the annual Game Awards. As expected, this year’s event showcased the best of the year and a few exciting new announcements.
Microsoft unveils the Xbox Series X
Microsoft kicked off night by finally revealing, what everyone has known as Project Scarlet, their next Xbox console.
Called the Xbox Series X, Microsoft’s next console promises to deliver four times the power of the Xbox One X.
Phil Spencer revealed some of the console’s specs on an official blog post:
“From a technical standpoint, this will manifest as world-class visuals in 4K at 60FPS, with possibility of up to 120FPS, including support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K capability.
Powered by our custom-designed processor leveraging the latest Zen 2 and next generation RDNA architecture from our partners at AMD, Xbox Series X will deliver hardware accelerated ray tracing and a new level of performance never before seen in a console.
Additionally, our patented Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology will allow developers to get even more out of the Xbox Series X GPU and our next-generation SSD will virtually eliminate load times and bring players into their gaming worlds faster than ever before.”
Microsoft also revealed that one of the consoles first games will be Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, the follow up to the critically acclaimed Hellblade.
Godfall, the first official PlayStation 5 game, is announced
Gearbox revealed a brand new IP called Godfall, a game which looks like a mix between Destiny and Borderlands but with swords.
Godfall will be a third-person game focused mainly on melee combat and is set in a brand new fantasy universe.
It is also the first to officially be revealed as a PlayStation 5 title, with the PS5 logo appearing at the end of the trailer.
Gears Tactics, Gears Of War mixed with XCOM
The next entry in the Gears of War series has been announced. Surprisingly, it is not a third-person shooter but rather a turn-based tactical game in the same vein as the recent XCOM games.
Gears Tactics will take place twelve years before the events of the original Gears of War and is definitely a departure from what Gears fans are used to.
Ghosts of Tsushima gets a new trailer
Probably one of the most anticipated games of next year, Ghosts of Tsushima, has a brand new trailer. The game combines stealth mechanics with all-out sword-fighting action.
The trailer combines come cinematic footage along with some gameplay to help build the hype for the game’s release.
A Brand New Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance game is coming
Wizards of the Coast announced that Dark Alliance, a spiritual successor to the 2001 Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, would be releasing next year.
As with its predecessor, Dark Alliance will include couch coop and will see players taking on various monstrosities, from Orcs to strange creatures, all in an effort to level up their character.
Fast & Furious Crossroads – a game about heists
Project Cars developer Slightly Mad Studios has revealed their next project. It’s a game based in the Fast and the Furious universe called Fast & Furious Crossroads.
Although the game will include cars going really fast, it will more interestingly also focus a lot on team-based heists. Players will travel from locale to locale pulling off various high-speed heists.
More Final Fantasy VII Remake
Ahead of the game’s release, Square Enix showed off yet another trailer for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. This time the short trailer focuses on the man with the big sword, Cloud Strife.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is coming
After the shutdown of Telltale Games last year, fans weren’t sure if they would ever see another Wolf Among Us title. Well, it seems that fans can rejoice as The Wolf Among Us 2 was revealed during the Game Awards and will see the original voice actors making a return.
Along with the announcement, a very short teaser trailer was shown.
Fight some demons in Sons of the Forest
Endnight Games, the team behind 2014’s The Forest, announced their next title, Sons of the Forest.
The game is a survival horror game that will see players having to fend off various demons and monsters.
The trailer doesn’t reveal much about the game besides some truly freaky monsters.
See Humankind in action
A new trailer released at The Game Awards gave us a look at Sega’s upcoming game, Humankind. The trailer reveals some of the game’s mechanics and gameplay.
Humankind is a turn-based strategy game that will see the player guiding their civilization through the various ages.
