The first supercharged ’80s trailer for Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984, the ninth entry in the DCEU, starring Gal Gadot as the titular character, Chris Pine (reprising his role as Steve Trevor), Kristen Wiig (as Cheetah) and Pedro Pascal (as Maxwell “Max” Lord), transports our favourite superheroine to a decade defined by synth music, pop icons and wavy big hair.
Even with the recent success of Shazam and Aquaman in 2019, the biggest draw in DC’s cinematic universe is probably still Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. The new film jumps 70 years ahead and now takes place during the golden ’80s – so expect a lot of over the top fashion and some obligatory LinnDrum samples.
Of course, the new trailer features plenty of shots of Gadot in action – our hero taking down bad guys with her Lasso of Truth and saving the day. But it also provides glimpses of Kristen Wiig as an archaeologist who eventually turns bad. Heck, there are even a few shots of mythical island of Themyscira. Again.
Things we learned from the trailer:
1. Wonder Woman’s iconic invisible jet might make an appearance.
2. Diana will wear an all-gold costume inspired by the comics.
3. Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah will be a friend and an enemy.
4. Diana will fly.
5. Steve Trevor is back, although we still don’t know how.
6. Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal is playing Maxwell Lord.
Overall, Wonder Woman 1984 looks incredibly promising. We’ve waited a long time for the sequel, after a number of delays. Let’s hope the film holds up to the standard of the first one.
In 1984, Diana Prince comes into conflict with two formidable foes: Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah.
