With the battle royale giant Fortnite’s popularity growing with each passing day, Sony has finally decided that it might be worth jumping aboard the crossplay bandwagon.
After both Nintendo and Microsoft decided to embrace Fortnite, Sony, being the odd one out, initially elected not to implement crossplay. This angered quite a few PlayStation 4 fans who weren’t able to join their Xbox One and Switch friends. This prompted fans to jump into action to convince Sony that crossplay is actually for the best and not some unholy union.
Well, it seems that all the pressure from the gaming community has finally paid off as Sony has announced that it will start a “crossplay beta” for Fortnite, which they see as the start of a broader strategy to bring crossplay to more of their games.
According to their statement, Sony finally admits to the benefits that crossplay may bring to the gaming industry.
“For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.”
Of course, this means that Fortnite players will now be able to play the game on the Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Furthermore, they will be able to share their accounts between these various platforms, allowing their progression and purchases to be carried over.
Some have wondered if this is this too little too late? Whatever your feelings may be towards Sony for waiting so long to implement this feature, one thing is for certain, it’s a wonderful thing to finally get fans of the various consoles playing and enjoying gaming together.
