Bethesda has announced that their upcoming multiplayer survival game Fallout 76 will see the return of the SPECIAL system and perks.
During QuakeCon, game director Todd Howard explained that as in previous Fallout games Fallout 76 will see the return of the SPECIAL system and perks. For those not familiar with the SPECIAL system (go play a Fallout game now!) what it basically boils down to is that this system determines a player’s Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck, hence it is called the SPECIAL system. Players are able to add points to each of these statistics as they level up. evolving their character over time. As players add points to each statistic, they will then be allowed to use the game’s perk cards, depending on the number of points invested in each statistic, which will determine how many perk cards they can equip. During the presentation, Bethesda showed off dozens of perk cards each bringing their own unique enhancement to your character, from increasing melee damage to the ability to revive fellow players using liquor.
Although Fallout 76 is a multiplayer survival game, Bethesda has continually stated that players will be able to play it as a single-player experience. This is also reflected through many of the perks as some offer players abilities that could aid them greatly when venturing into the wasteland alone.
We are still curious to see just how well the game will play as a single-player experience and whether the franchise’s new focus on multiplayer could dampen the game’s appeal.
Fallout 76 is set for release in November 2018 for the Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4.
