It seems that Ellie won’t be facing off against the dangers of The Last of Us Part 2 alone as Neil Druckmann announced that she will have an NPC companion.
The writer and co-director for The Last Of Us Part 2, Neil Druckmann, revealed that the game’s protagonist, Ellie, will not be going it alone but will instead be accompanied by an NPC. Most of what we have been shown of the game features Ellie fighting, hiding and sneaking around various environments on her own. However, according to Druckmann, this will not be the case in the final game.
Druckmann revealed the news during a Buzzfeed interview, but wouldn’t confirm who this NPC will be.
“Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. It’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo.”
Of course, fans have already started to guess that the NPC could be Ellie’s new companion Mina (the woman she is kissing in the latest trailer) or that it could even be Joel himself. For all we know, it could be a character we haven’t seen yet.
Whoever the NPC will be, Naughty Dog is making sure that they don’t just feel tacked on but that they have a reason for joining up with Ellie and that it feels that they are contributing to the player’s experience.
“Our general approach is to say, again, How do we treat them like people? How do we get them to behave honestly as those people? How do we give them interesting characteristics so that they can navigate the world, make meaningful actions, and surprise you in the way people do?”
What we do know is that the game is launching on the PlayStation 4, although no release date has been announced. After having Ellie be the NPC companion for most of the game in The Last of Us it would be intresting to have her be accompanied by NPC in the sequel. There is bound to be loads of speculation and even more rumours before the game finally releases.
