After a mostly lacklustre showing at last year’s E3, EA pulled out all of the stops for E3 2018 by not only revealing more about some of the already announced games but also announcing a brand new IP and a new Star Wars game.
Now, any conference where a new Star Wars game is announced is bound to draw some attention, although other EA announcements turned out to be just as big.
Anthem – Robot Suits In A Beautifully Brutal World
After the announcement of BioWare’s new sci-fi RPG, many fans were left wondering what exactly the game will be. Will it be a multiplayer online game in the same vein as Activision’s Destiny or will it be something completely different? At their E3 2018 conference, EA released a gorgeous new cinematic trailer for the game and revealed more details about what exactly this highly anticipated game is about.
Anthem will include both single and multiplayer experiences. Player’s home base, referred to as ‘home’, will be where players will experience a more story-driven single-player experience. Once you leave this area, you will be teaming up with various other players to try and tame the wilderness.
Now, you remember those giant robots suits called Javelins? Bioware also revealed that these suits will be fully customizable. Naturally, we all want our suits to be as awesome as they can be, you will be able to tweak and customize aspects of your suit to compliment your role or playstyle. Want that pink Javelin suit with missiles? In Anthem, you can have this and so much more.
With regards to the controversial loot boxes, EA has become infamous for BioWare has stated that Anthem will not contain these which saw fans breathing a sigh of relieve. Now keep in mind that BioWare has not stated whether players will be able to buy cosmetic items, but I would guess that this could be the case.
Lastly, it was announced that /em>Anthem would be releasing on the 22nd of February 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Battlefield V – Battle Royale And More
You all guessed it, Battlefield V will be getting a Battle Royale mode and, to be honest, with Battle Royale games being all the rage right now, we knew it would only be time before EA announced this.
Now, unfortunately, EA didn’t elaborate more on what exactly this mode will offer. We expect EA to reveal more information about this mode closer to the game’s release date.
EA also revealed a few new additions that the game will add to the Battlefield formula including letting players dash and fly through windows, allowing players to move turrets around more easily and having tanks being able to break through buildings. In addition to this, Battlefield V will also include several “war stories” that will focus on more unfamiliar battles of World War II.
Command & Conquer Rivals – The Fan Favourite Return
While the title might have gotten many Command & Conquer fans excited, there is one little caveat. The newly announced Command & Conquer Rivals will be a free-to-play mobile game which focuses mainly on PvP action. Now, many might be concerned that this could just be another cash grab, however, EA has stated that the game will be able to progress in the game for free simply by playing. They also have mentioned that microtransactions will be present.
The game will pit two factions against each other as you try and balance resources management and commanding your forces. There has been no release date announced although EA did release a trailer giving fans an overview of the game.
FIFA 19 – Another Year, Another FIFA
Another year brings another FIFA which builds on what came before and tries to bring an ever-more realistic football experience to players. EA announced that Christiano Ronaldo will be the cover athlete for /em>FIFA 19 but, more importantly, they announced that they have managed to pry the official Champions League licence from their competitors Konami’s PES. For many fans of the series, this is great news as the last FIFA game to have the license was released back in 2007.
EA also revealed that the game will be releasing for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in September of this year.
Star Wars Battlefront II – Get Ready For Those Pesky Clones
After all the controversy surrounding Star Wars Battlefront II and admitting that the game did have a rough start, EA has revealed that the iconic Clone Wars will be heading to the game. The new content for Battlefront II will introduce locations such as Geonosis and will include both heroes and villains such as General Grevious, Count Dooku, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker. EA has yet to reveal when the content will be releasing but we are excited to see what they have in store for players.
EA will also be introducing a new squad system to the game that will allow players to easily team up with friends when trying to save the galaxy. There is also a new Starfighter mode that places more focus on dogfights heading to Battlefront II.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order – Speaking of Star Wars…
A collective gasp went out as EA revealed Respawn Entertainment’s new Star Wars game, titledStar Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Respawn Entertainment who is probably best known for the Titanfall series of games have been hard at work creating a darker Star Wars experience than fans are used to. The game will take place between Episode III and Episode IV during which the Jedi found themselves being hunted.
Although EA didn’t mention much beyond this we do know that players will take on the role of a Padawan and that the game is scheduled for release in 2019. We can’t wait to pick up our lightsabers again.
Unravel 2 – Yarnie Is Back!
EA announced that Unravel‘s Yarnie is back and this time he’s bringing a friend. Unravel 2 is currently available (yes, you can download it right now!) and features not one but two Yarnies.
Developer Coldwood revealed that the sequel will be more upbeat and will shift away ever so slightly from puzzles towards platforming.
Players will be able to play with both Yarnies right from the start and can switch between them or have a friend join them in co-op. Naturally, the game will involve many sections where the two Yarnies will need to help each other out to reach certain areas. It’s all about teamwork this time around.
The best part of Unravel 2 is that players will be able to make their own Yarnie and, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to do that?
Sea of Solitude – The ocean calls
EA released a trailer for a game that was originally announced back in 2015. The game, called Sea of Solitude, sees players taking on the role of a woman called Kay. She finds herself transformed into something. She’s just not sure what. Players are tasked with exploring their submerged environments, meeting new people and, basically, trying to find out what happened to Kay.
The game does focus a lot on story and exploration but includes its fair share of puzzles. It’s a beautiful game with watercolour-like haunting visuals. It’s great to see EA supporting more indie titles and giving us more unique experiences.
