Now it’s official that Robert Pattinson is the new Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the question is, who else is joining the cast?
There have been rumours that there could be a massive rogues gallery with the likes of the Penguin, Riddler, Two-Face, Firefly, Mad Hatter and Catwoman featuring, along with the usual suspects in Batman lore.
Of course, this is merely speculation and nothing has been confirmed by the director or Warner Bros.
In the interim, though, we can have a little fun with fan casting and speculate who should get which part and why.
Alfred Pennyworth – Mark Rylance
One of the most underrated but outstanding actors of our generation is Mark Rylance. Whether he’s playing an introverted genius in Ready Player One or a spy in Bridge of Spies, he’s a chameleon who becomes one with his role. He wouldn’t just do a good job as Alfred; he’d smash it.
Jim Gordon – Jeffrey Wright
If you’ve watched Westworld, you’ll understand why Jeffrey Wright should be considered as Jim Gordon for The Batman. He possesses both a toughness and sensitivity to his performance that’ll resonate with fans of Gotham City’s most loyal police commissioner. Plus, Wright would rock a mean moustache.
Penguin – Andy Serkis
After the partnership that Reeves had with Andy Serkis in the Planet of the Apes series, the British actor must be a consideration for any part in The Batman. Serkis has proven himself as an actor who can transform into characters (albeit with motion-capture tech) and it isn’t hard to imagine him morphing into Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, complete with the accent and gawks.
Riddler – Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult didn’t get the main part in The Batman, but Reeves certainly thinks highly of him if he was the other top choice. It’s easy to see how Hoult could pull off the role of Edward Nigma in this movie, especially with his uncanny resemblance to Cory Michael Smith who played the Riddler on Gotham and his offbeat performance in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Two-Face – Jon Hamm
Look, we’re Bat-Hamm fans here, but it’s never going to happen. As much as we would’ve loved to see Jon Hamm as the Caped Crusader at least once, that ship has unfortunately sailed. Still, he could portray a cool-as-(tw)ice villain like Harvey Dent/Two-Face. The man can rock a tux and he’d be able to flex his acting chops in a dual role.
Firefly – Steve Zahn
The character of Firefly has been portrayed in different lights (pardon the pun) throughout the years. The gist is he’s a two-bit-criminal-turned-sociopath who likes to start fires. After witnessing Steve Zahn’s performances in more serious roles, there’s an opportunity for him to cement Firefly as a legitimate on-screen threat for the Dark Knight. He’d be an unexpected casting and it would work in his favour.
Mad Hatter – Peter Dinklage
Can you think of anyone else who’d recite Lewis Carroll’s lines as exquisitely as Peter Dinklage? After his sensational performance in Game of Thrones, we need more of Dinklage in our lives and he certainly could do something remarkable with the role of Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter.
Catwoman – Eiza González
The talk of Eiza González as Catwoman has been around for years. Considering how close she is to Pattinson’s age, it actually makes sense to cast her now than ever. Not only does she have the look to pull off Selina Kyle, but she also has the backing of the fanbase.
