The Blade Runner 2049 prequel shorts continue with a Shinichiro Watanabe directed anime, titled Blade Runner Black Out 2022, which shows what happens when humans start killing Replicants.
The new 15-minute short was written and directed by the Cowboy Bebop director, and also features music by Miguel Atwood Ferguson and Kuedo.
It’s the third of three prequel shorts that connect the original film with Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
“I was careful about two things when creating this anime piece,” Watanabe says in a teaser for the short. “The first was to pay the greatest respect to the original Blade Runner. The second was to make this anime true to the world, but not an imitation.”
After months of anticipation and years in the making, the first reactions to the film, which releases next week (October 6th), have been very positive, with some calling it a sci-fi masterpiece.
