Black Panther’s fictional African nation, Wakanda, has been hot on the lips of Marvel fans on the internet. Some have even gone as far as to argue that the technological utopia is a real place hidden within the continent (it’s not!). Now, a petition – which already has 4,000 signatures – is seeking a spinoff show based on the legendary Vibranium-powered city.
Eric Hamilton has created a Change.org petition requesting Marvel to explore the origins of the technologically advanced North East African nation in a Netflix-produced series. With Black Panther quickly becoming one of Marvel’s biggest hits (heading towards $1 billion at the box office), it’s not unlikely that The House of Mouse will look at ways of expanding the world.
For those who don’t know, while tribal in certain aspects of its culture, Wakanda possesses technology often more sophisticated than anywhere else on Earth. It’s a wonderful Afrofuturist world with holographic tech, Vibranium-powered streetcars, magnetic-levitation trains, science fiction gadgets and gizmos. Who wouldn’t want to see more of that?
The petition reads:
Telling the back story of Wakanda would be a game changer. How did Wakanda become the most technologically advanced country on Earth? From the technology to the artistry coupled with the rich African traditions, the fans demand more. The Black Panther fanbase would love to see a Wakanda Series on Netflix. This series would expand the depth of the Marvel universe and we feel Marvel/Disney would enjoy creating and adapting these stories as much as we would love watching them. #WakandaSeries
