Barry Allen is getting a makeover when The Flash returns for season five. Grant Gustin shared the first photo of Barry’s new super-suit on Instagram.
While the differences aren’t that drastic, they are rather significant. The costume features none of the leather that previous suits had – it’s all spandex, and bears a close resemblance to the classic comic-book costume.
The suit is multi-textured and sleek. The belt is all gold and ditches the smaller Flash symbols on the side, going for one continuous bolt-like design. The mid-section has some subtle lines, but is not as raised and pronounced as the last suit. The Flash symbol remains unchanged – although it is more pronounced on the sleeker suit.
The biggest change for fans of the show is the absence of the chin-strap, which is a first for the TV show’s costume (but very much in line with the comics).
Since The Flash began, Barry Allen’s suit has undergone minor changes each season. As the character grew and developed, the suits also evolved in order to incorporate new and helpful gadgets for our hero to use in the field.
But it’s likely that the new suit is not courtesy of Cisco (Carlos Valdes) this time.
Judging by the Comic-Con trailer, it seems that Barry will need a new suit once his old one gets wrecked in battle. Luckily, Nora (his daughter from the future) has a spare contained inside the iconic Flash ring from the comics.
Nora appeared at the end of season five, and will be a regular throughout season five, although her storyline is yet to be revealed.
It’s great to see the suits becoming more comic accurate as The Flash continues. The new suit with the Flash ring is sure to please fans – especially die-hard comic-book fans.
The fifth season of The Flash will debut on Tuesday, October 9th on The CW.
