It’s probably not the biggest surprise, but the 19th film in the MCU, Avengers: Infinity War, just had the biggest opening of all time in South Africa with R24.6 million (287 thousand attendances) over the weekend. Friday 27 April also saw Infinity War rake in an impressive R8.4 million, the biggest industry opening day ever at the local box office.
Just last month Black Panther became the all-time top-grossing film in South Africa, with a haul of over R105 million (1.4 million attendances) since it’s 16 February 2018 release. It seems the latest Avengers movie might reach a similar feat.
The film is also breaking records in other parts of the continent, with West Africa reporting a N137.4 million opening.
If there was ever any doubt about Marvel’s influence on modern day cinema, Avengers: Infinity War has settled it. The public has spoken. I wonder how South African prankster Leon Schuster feels about his records being broken?
