Finally, the wait is over. Revenge of the Fans is reporting that a new R-rated Mortal Kombat animated movie is in production with Warner Bros. Animation. While it’s only a rumour, fans of the hyperviolent gaming franchise should be excited.
For the longest time, we’ve wanted to see Mortal Kombat come to life on the big screen or small screen again. The campy versions from the ’90s don’t hold up well today. With the character’s popularity still on the rise, and the video game continuing to break records, it only makes sense that Warner maximises the brands full potential.
Warner Bros. Animation seems like the perfect home for an R-rated Mortal Kombat film. With a number of adult DC animated movies under their belt, the studio could easily make the leap to recreating Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Raiden, and Sub-Zero in a way that does the characters justice. The honest truth is that nobody will be happy unless there is the gore, blood, bone-crushing kills we’ve come to expect from the fighter.
According to the report, there are also a number of stars already signed on. Joel McHale possibly as Johnny Cage. Jennifer Carpenter who will probably be playing Sonya Blade. Steve Blum returning as Sub-Zero. And Patrick Seitz as Scorpion.
Live-action films based on video games have always been tricky in Hollywood. Perhaps a Mortal Kombat animated movie would be the better choice. With a new game scheduled for April, it might just be the year of the dragon. “Get over here!”
