Director James Wan has revealed that Aquaman 2 will go in a slightly different direction from the first movie.
During the DC FanDome virtual panel, which also featured Patrick Wilson, Wan said he wants to further develop the stories of Aquaman‘s supporting characters. He also said fans can expect something fresh and exciting from the second instalment.
After reflecting on the first movie, Wan told viewers that the sequel would be “more serious and a little more relevant in the world we’re living in today.”
The revelation prompted Wilson, who plays Orm Marius, to share his excitement about the possibility of seeing new worlds in Aquaman 2.
“I know [Wan] loves world-building and I’d like to see some of that. I know you’re going to push that ocean. There’s a lot of unexplored ocean!”
Wan went on to assure Wilson (and fans) that there will definitely be new worlds, and that Wilson should stay excited about it.
“I can definitely guarantee you new worlds in this next one and I think you’re going to be very excited as an actor.”
Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Warner Bros had signed frequent James Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to write Aquaman 2. Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote Aquaman with Will Beall. James Wan and Peter Safran will serve as producers.
Aquaman was one of DC Films biggest success stories, grossing over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. The 2018 movie became the highest-grossing DC film of all-time for Warner Bros.
