Probably best described as Harry Potter meets District 9, Apocalypse Now Now is an urban fantasy short film shot and set in the heart of the supernatural underworld of South Africa.
Two weeks ago we saw the release of the exciting teaser trailer for the proof of concept short and this week it’s arrived online courtesy of shortoftheweek.com. Adapted from Charlie Human’s novel by director Michael Matthews and writer-producer Sean Drummond as a precursor to a feature film, Apocalypse Now Now is the South African sci-fi flick you’ve always wanted. From the production to the CGI and visual effects, everything is top notch and really well-produced.
Snarky, monster-porn-dealing teen, Baxter Zevcenko, might be a serial killer. His girlfriend, Esme, is missing, and he’s the prime suspect. To clear his name, he’ll turn to Cape Town’s grizzliest, drunkest bounty hunter, Jackson ‘Jackie’ Ronin. Little does he know that Ronin is a supernatural bounty-hunter, and that he’s about to be dragged headlong into a deep, dark Cape Town underbelly full of monsters and myth, shadowy government forces, bloodthirsty crow-men and a conspiracy across time and space.
The short stars Garion Dowds as Baxter Zevcenko, Louw Venter as Jackie Ronin, and Faniswa Yisa as The Vigilante.
