After a week of rumours, it’s official. Famed performance-capture genius Andy Serkis is directing Venom 2, Sony’s sequel to the 2018 symbiote superhero film that grossed $856 million at the global box office, starring Tom Hardy.
Serkis’ third directorial effort, after spending most of his career as a motion capture artist for films like The Lord of The Rings and Planet of The Apes, will be a comic book film. According to sources, it was his expertise with CGI and the technology that landed him the Venom 2 gig.
Of course, while this will be Serkis’ first time directing a superhero movie, it won’t be his first experience with the genre. Serkis played Ulysses Klaue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but was killed off early on in Black Panther.
While the original Venom film, a Spider-Man spin-off, was met with mixed reception from both critics and fans, it did achieve box office success. It’s no surprise then that Sony is working hard on a sequel.
Kelly Marcel is penning the script for Venom 2, which might see the return of Woody Harrelson as chief Venom villain Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage.
Venom 2 has an October 2, 2020 release date.
