With the final curtain call for Gotham approaching, EPIX has announced a new Batman prequel series focusing on Alfred Pennyworth, the famous Wayne Manor butler, housekeeper, legal guardian, best friend, aide-de-camp, and surrogate father figure to Bruce Wayne, is on its way.
It seems the joke made in the Teen Titans Go! To the Movies about Alfred getting his own film isn’t too far off from the truth. With Gotham coming to an end with Season 5 of the show, the showrunners are focusing their energy into creating something special for fans, a ten-part drama series focusing on the lowly butler (and former British SAS soldier) before he came to Gotham City. Thankfully, Pennyworth will not be connected to FOX’s Gotham at all and Sean Pertwee will not reprise the role.
Who would Batman be without Alfred Pennyworth, his loyal butler and constant companion in crimefighting? Considering Alfred’s unyielding assistance to both Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight, the answer is probably not much. Yet, how much do we really know about Mr Pennyworth? Where did he come from? How did he meet the Waynes? And how did someone with so many skills end up as a butler?
It’s about time that Alfred creeps out of Batman’s shadow and gets some of the limelight. It would be great to see a really good origin story that actually works. With Krypton currently airing and Metropolis still on the way, DC doesn’t seem short on TV series ideas.
