The other Batman spin-off series nobody asked for, Pennyworth, has a new trailer which sees the twentysomething former SAS officer protecting Thomas Wayne, Batman’s dad. Set in 1960s London, Alfred’s origin story looks… unnecessary.
Television networks have found a way about making a series about just about everyone within the Batman universe. We had Gotham, which focused on a young Commissioner James Gordon, Titans, which focuses on Batman’s sidekicks, and now his super butler, Alfred (played by Jack Bannon here), is getting his own show too.
Not surprisingly, the series comes from Bruno Heller, who also created FOX’s Pennyworth sequel, Gotham.
Of course, there’s a joke about that in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies that these producers probably didn’t see. Or maybe they did and still thought it was a good idea.
Either way, Pennyworth is here and it’s the most British superhero series on TV right now. Maybe even more English than the current Doctor Who. It’s clear as day that Jack Bannon is channelling a bit of Michael Caine here. Except, he is much younger and, probably, a lot sexier than Caine’s Alfred. A bit like James Bond actually.
If that’s your cup of tea, you’re in for a treat. Just go into it expecting a spy thriller, and not something from CW’s Arrowverse.
