This August DC Comics launches a 12-issue series of the Adventures of the Super Sons. It was originally announced by DC Entertainment’s Director of Publicity Michael Shelling on his personal Twitter account.
Adventures of the Super Sons is written by Peter J. Tomasi, with art from Carlo Barberi (the same creative team who closed out the “Rebirth” era Super Sons series in May, after 16 issues).
The story follows the superhero antics of Jonathan Kent (Super Boy) and Damian Wayne (Robin) and opens with the boys doing battle against a giant Superman statue that’s causing havoc in Metropolis.
Dubbed the “Summer of Super” by Super Boy, this epic, dual storyline transcends current events as the main plotline reveals our heroes to be the targets of an interstellar team of young villains called “The Gang”.
The highlight of the first issue in the series is the friendship between Jon and Damian. The character’s personality traits are clearly defined – Jon is whimsical and team orientated, while Damian is more serious and slightly less of a team player. Although their personalities clash, the team-up works because they contrast each other perfectly.
The writing is good, providing the perfect mix of humour and seriousness. The story moves at a consistent pace and the dialogue is filled with a variety of tones, that when put together makes the title a great read.
Adventures of the Super Sons is also a seamless continuation for fans of past titles, as well as an ideal starting point for readers who haven’t followed the antics of Jon and Damian before.
The art is beautiful, it’s easy to follow and even easier to get hooked. We can’t wait to see what the “Summer of Super” will bring in the rest of the Adventures Of The Super Sons series.
