Many still have fond memories controlling the slave turned revolutionary Abe in Abe’s Oddysee. Now, after almost a decade, a new Oddworld game starring the Mudokon character is in the works: Oddworld: Soulstorm.
Oddworld: Soulstorm sees the former slave returning to fulfil the dream of Lorne Lanning, the mind behind the Oddworld games, to develop five games set in the universe.
Originally, this was the plan Lanning and his team had until their plans were derailed by publisher GT Interactive, who wanted more games set in the Oddworld universe. This meant that the team had to forego their original plan and quickly develop more games, most of which received a lukewarm reception.
Soulstorm is a chance to go back and resurrect the quintology the way Lanning had originally envisioned it: five games centring around Abe and his adventures.
Soulstorm will be a 2.9D platformer, meaning that instead of a background and foreground there is now a middle ground as well. It’s a small change but one that brings a lot of potential with it.
Along with this addition, the game also now sports destructible environments with a big focus placed on physics and, believe it or not, a crafting system which sees Abe and his fellow Mudokons repurposing various scrap to create new items and weapons. This makes sense as these freedom fighters need to get weapons for their armouries somewhere. Some of these new weapons include Molotov cocktails fashioned out of rags and bottles and some even more devious creations.
I’d be lying if I said the new teaser trailer doesn’t me excited for Abe’s new adventure. There is no release date yet but let’s hope that Oddworld: Soulstorm releases sooner than later. I personally can’t wait to save more Mudokons.
