Xbox One Launches in South Africa

Xbox One Launches in South Africa Tonight

Written by

Shortly before the official release at midnight tonight, 23rd September 2014, Microsoft hosted a media event to showcase all that is the Xbox One. In something more along the lines of an intimate setting, media were presented with a few brief features on the device, which included a successful demonstration (as you know these things can always crash at the most inopportune moments) of the One’s voice recognition and command system. Along with the brief demo, Microsoft also highlighted the cross-platform integration between different Windows-based devices, some using Xbox SmartGlass, while others just offer native integration to the platform by means of a quick device pairing. It is worth noting that the device has been taunted as a gaming console, and is “all about games, games, games.” This in contrast to the international launch of the “entertainment system.” I can only assume that many of the online video streaming and VOD services will be limited in South Africa, which pretty much cuts out a chunk of what the device is actually capable of. Needless to fret, however, as there is still more than enough there to keep you entertained for some time to come.

This, then, lead to the serious business of getting our hands on a few of the demo units to play around with, as well as a media house, FIFA 15 challenge on the Xbox One. To my utter surprise, I somehow managed to win the challenge, which gives you, our loyal readers, the chance to win the Xbox One in a competition that will soon appear on our site. So do stay tuned for that.

If you’re looking to get your hands on the console as early as possible, the Xbox One will be available at midnight, 23rd September 2014, at selected Incredible Connection stores across the country between 00h00 and 01h00. BT Games, who had also previously announced that they would also be doing a midnight launch, has decided against this at almost the 11th hour, cancelling due to “security reasons.” For those who had planned on raiding any BT Games stores at midnight will now have to shoot across to the nearest Incredible Connection to join the queues. Stores include:

    1. Cavendish
    2. Somerset West
    3. Bloemfontein
    4. Cresta
    5. Rosebank
    6. Sandton
