The next version of Windows has finally launched, and, yes, it’s free to upgrade. Microsoft has launched Windows 10 globally, South Africa included, with the first batch of users who reserved their upgrades receiving the notification that they’re now able to download. To avoid service overload, the upgrade process will be fragmented around the world. The upgrade is available to all Windows users already on versions 7 and 8.1, with Vista and older versions having to make the required purchases. The prices, as revealed by Microsoft are as follows:

  • Windows 10 Home – R1,699
  • Windows 10 Pro – R3,199

For those upgrading, there are a few variants of Windows OS available, Home, Pro and Mobile. If you’re upgrading from Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium you will have access to download Windows 10 Home, while Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Those upgrading from Windows 8.1 Home will download the Windows 10 Home version, whereas those on Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro for Students will upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

The minimum system requirements for the upgrade are as follows:

  • Processor: 1GHz or faster processor or SoC
  • RAM: 1GB for 32-bit or 2GB for 64-bit
  • Hard disk space: 16GB for 32-bit OS, 20GB for 64-bit OS
  • Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
  • Display: 800 x 600
