The October ‘Movie Buffs’ title is the crime thriller, Runner Runner (national release date: Friday, 27 September). This special pre-release screening takes place at Ster-Kinekor Cavendish on Thursday, 26 September from 19:30.
The monthly Ster-Kinekor ‘Movie Buffs’ event offers those who appreciate and love the medium of film an opportunity to watch a title before its release date, and engage in a meaningful discussion about the film. There is also a lucky draw during the evening and the chance to win some great prizes.
The Cape Town event is hosted by Stephen ‘Spling’ Aspeling, who is making his name as one of South Africa’s keenest and most knowledgeable film reviewers. He will introduce the film beforehand and, following the screening, will lead an interactive discussion on the film’s performance after which you can go and enjoy a free cappuccino at Tribakery, which is exclusive to Cavendish Movie Buffs.
Runner Runner follows a Princeton graduate student who finds himself caught between the FBI and a malevolent online gambling tycoon in this action-packed thriller from The Lincoln Lawyer director, Brad Furman. A whiz at the virtual-poker table, bright young Ivy Leaguer, Richie (Justin Timberlake), had raised nearly enough cash to pay for his tuition fees, when he lost it all in the blink of an eye. Convinced that he’s been cheated and determined to confront the swindler, Richie hops on a plane to Costa Rica. It is here that he comes face-to-face with online gambling mogul, Ivan Block (Ben Affleck), who introduces him to a world of wealth and privilege.
Meanwhile, the FBI has been watching Ivan and attempts to strong-arm Richie into turning informant, in the knowledge that, with Richie’s help, they could bring Ivan’s illegitimate empire crashing to the ground. Who is the more dangerous: the entrepreneur who feeds his enemies to crocodiles or the federal agents who appear to be willing to break the law in order to uphold it?
