  1. Fazielah Williams

When the fridge suddenly goes quiet and then starts back up again, as if it’s experienced a sudden ghostly recharge!

  2. Jane

The dogs barking & you always hear noises when you home alone, sometimes question yourself if you really heard a noise or imagined. LOL so you might say my imagination scares me the most!

  3. Kevin Rule

I had a very strange experience once when I was about 10 years old…my dad always woke me up for school and one morning I woke up and he was standing there attaching his cufflinks and I said “ok ok I’m up”. Then he did this weird arm movement at the same time as the heater in my room made a loud noise. I thought it was a bit weird…so I called out to my dad who answered from his bedroom. It freaked me out so I closed my eyes and then the figure was hiding behind my open door.

  4. Carla Van Der Westhuizen

Mirrors scare me when I am home alone. Ever since I watched the Bloody Mary episode of Supernatural, I avoid looking in mirrors when there is no one else in the house. I feel like the bitch is just waiting to jump out and make my eyes bleed hahaha.

  5. Ernst

You know when there is loadshedding, and you locked everything, and closed every window, and you are tucked away in bed? And then you cant remember whether or not you did lock the front door, or close that small little window hidden behind the pot plants? So you get out of bed, and stumble through the dark, to the ‘unlocked’ – just to see your own reflection in the glass of the sliding door… And for a moment you are not sure whether that was you, or if that was someone else moving towards the ‘unlocked/open’….

  6. Alwynne Baatjies

What scares me the most is the thought of my leftovers not still being in the fridge when i get home from work!!!!!

  7. Damian

Just those strange sounds the fridge makes. Always makes me jump and walk slowly around the house and jump around every corner with my heart beating faster than anything.

  8. michalenp

I have a neighbour with a new-born, sometimes when I am home alone and its quiet when the baby cries it sounds like its coming from inside my flat. Seriously creeps me out every time.

  9. I moved to a flat upstairs from my old one, and every now and then I hear the distinctive squeak of my old flat’s front door, and think someone’s coming in to my current flat. Since I live alone, this is alarming.

  10. When i was around 5 or 6, we moved into the house i would call home for the next 18 years, in Walmer, Port Elizabeth. It had previously been owned by a retired Judge, notorious for having sentenced more than his fare share of people to hang in the 70s and 80s. As old age and paranoia set in (post 1994), he made small alterations to the property, including the removal of a partial brick from the wall of his house, allowing him to spy through to the large gates outside where his doorbell was set. He was convinced that someone would one day come calling, seeking revenge for one of the many sentencing he had carried out. The spy hole made sure that he would never open the door to the wrong person.

We demolished that wall and build a bedroom – a bedroom that i shared with my younger brother for the majority of those 18 years.

Not long after, i awoke one night to the sound of our outside bedroom door-handle jiggling up and down. I climbed off my bed, walked across the room and pulled back the curtain. The door handle jumped and shook in front of me. I could see clearly through the glass door. There was no-one outside. I leapt back in bed and under the covers. Finally, it stopped.

My brother never heard it. But i had. And i continued to hear it, over and over again. I would wake up in the middle of the night, with my brother asleep in the bed beside me, and the door-handle would be jumping up and down, and i’d hind under the covers until the chuck-chuck-chuck would finally die down and i could eventually go back to sleep.

Several years later, a fault in the new bedroom’s foundation meant that we had had to knock down the far wall. When we built it back up, we put in a small, non-opening window. Through it, you could see our front gate.

    The handle never jiggled again.

Our family is real, the house is real, the judge is real, and the history is real. This all really happened. But almost twenty years later, i still can’t explain it. And i still always check who’s at the front door before i open.

  11. I think what scares me the most is that i would be ready for anything lol I’m a horror/thriller junkie and Supernatural addict and Gamer.. So you best believe I would be kitted out with weapons.. Bring on the Zombie Apocolyps !!

  12. rehana seedat

Running footsteps on the stairs when you know you’re alone in the house, or children whispering/giggling when no children are there.

  13. Joash

I recently moved into a flat in a small township and when I go to bed, there’s a small opening on my ceiling boards and I always wake up in the middle of the night and see some sort of shapes moving around. Still hard for me to sleep without the lights on.

  14. Maryke Ciorovich

After watching a scary movie, I always think that someone is going to come down the manhole in the roof and get me!!!!! YIKES!!

  15. Tammy-Leigh Smith

I know this sounds irrational, But when I am home alone I get most terrified of a Zombie Apocalypse ,(where will I go? What food will I have? Would I be able to kill my mom if she tried to eat my brains?) Also, mainly because I have no suitable weapons apart from a hairdryer or broom, and, I cant look after myself as an adult in the real world – how the heck would I cope alone if a wave of brain eating dead bodies started banging on my door.

    Scary stuff

  16. Theesan Vedan

That I have to email an important pdf (100mb) through to the boss, by a midnight deadline. (By the way, I don’t understand midnight deadlines- like my .docx will turn into a pumpkin or something). My internet is offline though and I have to hook up my pc to my phone (and tether its internet connection). R300 is data later and it’s almost done and then suddenly…Load shedding (by the way, this is not just a story but a real event (refer to, ‘Stories of my miserable lfe’)

  17. Annie

When I’m home alone, I’m always afraid of looking in the mirror. If the lights go out, that’s it, I will wait outside until someone comes home.

  18. Ryan Allen

when its rainy and dark, i have a big tree out front and the rustling leaves are the stuff nightmares are made of!!

could swear i saw someone at the tree staring at me one night!! maybe just a shadow, but still enough to make the hairs on the back of you neck stand up
