Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutagen Mayhem

Verdict: 4 / 5

The Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back! This Season 2 volume 1 DVD is entitled Mutagen Mayhem and, as you can imagine, each episode features the theme of the ooze that created our heroes. Expect to see monsters, mutants and plenty of punches.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutagen Mayhem

The DVD features the first 5 episodes of the second season, “Mutation Situation”. It deals with Shredder teaming up with the Kraang and the chaos that comes as a result of the Turtles foiling their villainous plot. “Follow the Leader” focuses on Leonardo’s leadership and how it is put to the test by Karai and her robotic Foot Soldiers who are able to learn and copy the Turtles with ease. “Invasion of the Squirrelanoids” is definitely the best episode on this disk as it pays tribute to Alien. Yes, the Xenomorph aliens that scared you as a kid. This episode follows the trend; it is creepy and will keep the viewer on the edge of their seat. It has some great humour as well. The cross over between the Alien franchise and the Ninja Turtles works well and this episode is executed perfectly. “Mutagen Man Unleashed” introduces Timothy/Pulveriser as you have not seen him before. All that is left of the Turtles former ally is a tube of organs.

As Donatello fears of losing April’s affection to another human, he relays his feelings to Timothy, creating a threat that he could not imagine. This episode also introduces an important member of the TMNT cast! “Mikey Gets Shellacne” this is a hilarious episode that comes as a result of Michelangelo being his usual careless self. Mikey has managed to turn himself into a living pimple with only hours left before he pops himself from existence. Whilst being a largely gross experience, this episode does introduce a new villain, the deadly Rahzar!
The action scenes are great as usual, especially in, “Follow the Leader”. This episode showcases a lot of the TMNT close combat prowess. The action scenes are quite violent at times but they tend to slice and dice robots and not actual people…so I guess that is passable. The amount of action sequences in this series is impressive as they do not recycle footage; instead each scene is choreographed expertly.

The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 making Squirrelanoid screeches sounds as scary as possible. Each sound effect is heard clearly whilst the dialogue is kept crisp and unhindered. Presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 aspect ratio, one can only wonder why this amazing title has not been released on Blu Ray as yet. That aside, the animation is still brilliant and the presentation is top notch. The action sequences flow with ease and the intricate details on characters can be seen with ease. The DVD has two Special Feature to offer: “Ninjas in New York” and “Creatures of the Night” features that focus on the characters of this awesome franchise.

This is an enjoyable DVD that will keep you entertained for hours. It has a little bit for everyone and it does a great job of keeping the TMNT fresh and exciting for new viewers. With the Ninja Turtles trying to find 63 mutagen canisters spread throughout Manhattan, Mutagen Mayhem is guaranteed!
