When I first saw Ben Reilly’s Scarlet Spider costume I thought it was amazing. It was so raw yet functional and truly impressive. When I saw this figure released in the Marvel Legends 6-inch line, it simply had to be mine and it was definitely worth the purchase!
The sculpt is true to the comic representation. You get his signature web free red costume but this costume is also shading free so it is that strong red colour through and through no different shades or tones but this is definitely not a major problem if anything his colour makes him more eye catching. His head sculpt looks clean and well finished. The big white eyes demand attention as they are a strong contrast to the red colour that floods most of the figure. His hoodie is pulled off amazingly! And does not interfere with his articulation at all!
The hoodie colour is spot on and it has sculpted wrinkles which make it look authentic. The spider logos on the back and front work well with the ab crunch as they logo has been painted right through. His arms continue with the red plastic, and then he has two great looking silver web shooters. They have nice panelling to show the separate plates in the web shooters. At the waist he has his signature utility belt; The belt fits nicely into the hoodie. The buckle and canisters work well with the swivel and are not fixed to the hoodie. The canisters and buckle are painted in the same silver as the web shooters. The strap of the belt is finished off in the same brown plastic that has been used for his signature ankle pouches. From the waist down he is a solid red, it is the ankle pouches that add a little colour to this section. So, all in all, this is a pretty accurate representation of this character but it is the articulation that really allows us to capture the essence of this character.
If you are creating a figure of any Spider family character, you must be able to make them very poseable or it won’t work. The head is able to look up and down with ease as the joint is not hinder by his hood at all. His head can also move side to side with ease. He has ball jointed shoulders with great movement. There are bicep swivels, double jointed elbows. The wrists can swivel and they have hinges as well. He has an ab crunch that can move forward and backwards with ease, his waist is also able to swivel. He has a t-crotch that has great movement; he can kick out to the side and forwards, his ability to kick backwards is somewhat hindered by his glutes. He has an upper thigh swivel, double jointed knees and his ankles are on hinges that are able to pivot! So you can prepare to strike a number of those infamous poses!
True to the Marvel Legends line, we can expect some accessories. This figure comes with two extra pairs of hands (wall crawling hands, web shooting hands and closed fists) you are also given two different looking heads for the Rhino-Build-A-Figure. If you collect each figure in this series you are able to build a rather impressive figure of Rhino.
The packaging on this one is great! It has awesome gloss silk-screens on the front logo as well as the character picture at the back. Even the tiny images of the other figures in the wave have received a little added gloss silk-screen. The blister card packaging showcases the figure and all of its accessories quite well. It has a nice picture of the Spider-Man on each side. The back of the packaging also has a brief character bio on the lead character as well as a picture of the Build-A-Figure Rhino.
