Able to do the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs, there are few space ships in the Star Wars Universe as well known and loved as the Millennium Falcon. Not only is it a spaceship that has captured the hearts and imaginations of many kids who first saw it blazing onto the screen in the original films, but it has once again proved that you just can’t put an old ship down when it flew onto the screen again in The Force Awakens.

As a lover of all things Star Wars, you could imagine my excitement when I received Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon for review. I was initially stunned by the size of the ship as I expected it to be a lot larger. I was also concerned that the ship might not be as sturdy as it should be, since kids tend to be even more destructive than a squadron of TIE fighters. After removing the Millennium Falcon from its box, it soon became clear that even though it was a lightweight ship made out of a less rigid plastic than one would expect, it was still surprisingly sturdy and would be able to fend off most of the bumps and crashes it might receive during a space battle in our living room.

Hasbro needs to be commended for the amount of detail they have been able to pack into this smaller version of the Star Wars spacecraft. Each panel, conduit, and even maintenance access bays are clearly visible on the ship’s exterior. And although the upper quad cannon is firmly embedded on the ship’s surface and unable to move, it’s still an awesome detail. The ship also has the iconic main sensor antenna which strikingly jots up from the ship’s main body. This is also the only piece that needs to be assembled. Luckily, it effortlessly clicks into place. Special mention should be made of the heat exhaust vents which have been painted with scorch marks, indicating that the ship has seen its fair share of action. This detail helps bring character to the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.

While on the subject of paint, for a ship that consists mainly of grey, it’s easy for the Millennium Falcon to come across as looking dull. What Hasbro has been able to do is add splashes of rust and dark greys, which actually adds a ton of character and accentuates the details on the ship.

There are quite a few people out there who love to customise their Star Wars ships and the Star Wars The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon is perfectly suited for this. With a hollow body that can be taken apart quite easily, it is perfectly suited for adding an LED or two (which is something I’ll probably be doing myself).

All that said, there were a few things I wished Hasbro could have done a bit differently. Firstly, I would’ve loved if the main quad cannon was a movable part of the ship instead of being embedded into the body. Also, while the top of the ship is covered in little paint details, the bottom, although just as detailed, has no painted areas. I would’ve preferred if it had some more colour on there, especially since it is glaringly obvious when manoeuvring the craft around your house.

Overall, I had loads of fun reviewing this product. Sure, it was a lot smaller than I initially anticipated, but for such a small ship it packs quite a bit of fun. With its attention to detail, lightweight body (which allows for greater speed through the galaxy) and customizability, the Star Wars The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon would be a great addition to any rebel who would want to take on the Kessel Run.
