Ster-Kinekor launched their first premium cinema experience more than two years ago with the Cine Prestige in Rosebank. Since then, Ster-Kinekor has expanded this premium range of cinemas to Cradlestone Mall, The Grove Mall, Gateway Mall, and now Sandton City. After my first taste of this premium cinematic experience, I’ve found it difficult going back to watching on the, now normal, big screen, viewing more than 50% of all theatre movies at the Cine Prestige. In continuation of our series, Top SA Cinemas, I made the journey down to the Cine Prestige in Sandton City.
Upon entering the, glassed-off, premium waiting room at the Sandton Cine Prestige, there is a clear difference between it and the one I’ve previously visited at Rosebank. The execution here is, indeed, more premium. That being said, and without diminishing the aforementioned, it is worth noting that the Rosebank theatre has been around for quite some time, something that Ster-Kinekor has no doubt improved upon since. And it isn’t simply the foyer and updated refreshment counter, with updated gourmet menu, that has seen improvements, the experience is seen all the way down the, purple-lit, aisle to the seats. Each of the 52 installed leather seats (single seater, or double lovenest seats) have been automated, providing easy to recline options with a press of a button. The snack trays also provide a unique element to your experience, fitted with SK’s first refrigerated cup-holders to keep your cold-drinks cold.

As with Rosebank, any orders placed from the refreshment counter will be delivered to your seat, by a designated staff member, once ready. With any entertainment and restaurant experience, the staff play a critical role in portraying the company’s image and mission statement to its customers. It is with great delight that I can attest to just such an experience at the Sandton Cine Prestige. Staff members were both friendly and helpful, while still being willing to take a few photos for this review without any question. A big thanks from FoS to the staff on the day; from the ticket stub collector, to the clerk and waitress.
Viewing movies at Cine Prestige has always been justified based on my previous experiences. This time around, however, watching a movie at Cine Prestige is a must rather than something that requires justification. It is important to remember as well, that your membership discounts count toward Cine Prestige as well. So, depending on your card membership from the different companies, movie-goers can easily enjoy the experience for around R50 per ticket.
MOST LUXURIOUS CINEMA EXPERIENCE COMES TO SANDTON
Automated reclining leather chairs upgrade cinema viewing to a whole new level
Movie-lovers have enjoyed the eleven state-of-the-art Ster-Kinekor cinemas on offer at Sandton City for over 40 years, resulting in it being one of the group’s busiest sites. With the opening of the cinema chain’s premium cinema experience, CINE PRESTIGE, at its popular Sandton complex, Ster-Kinekor will ensure that audiences continue to experience ‘Great Moments at their Greatest’ in luxurious comfort.
All the cinemas at Sandton boast the latest in digital projector technology that offers crystal clear images and quality surround sound speaker systems, with five cinemas able to screen films in 3D. The most exciting news is that, due to popular demand, the complex now also boasts an exclusive Cine Prestige cinema, which is also 3D capable.
This exclusive cinema format epitomises film-viewing heaven and pure luxury rolled into one. Audiences relax in large leather chairs that, at the touch of a button from the control panel, unfold into a comfortable reclining position to watch the latest blockbusters play out on the big screen, all whilst you indulge yourself in one of the many gourmet platter options available.
The Cine Prestige cinema at Sandton is fitted with 52 seats, made up of a mix of single and double automated recliner chairs that ooze lavish comfort. Each chair has a snack tray neatly fitted into it, together with yet another first for Ster-Kinekor – a refrigerated cup-holder to ensure that your cold-drink stays cold throughout the movie!
“The designer chairs are what make Cine Prestige our premium offering,” says Doug Place, Marketing Executive of Ster-Kinekor Theatres. “The upgrades to the seats in our new Sandton cinema, including the automated reclining facility and a refrigerated cup-holder, ensure a smooth, sleek and ultra-comfortable cinema experience.
“This is the perfect date-night venue. Adding to the experience is an exclusive VIP lounge where delicious platters of food can be ordered and enjoyed inside the cinema, and where queuing is a thing of the past.”
This is the company’s fifth investment in the luxurious Cine Prestige format, following the successes of installations at The Zone in Rosebank in April 2012, Cradlestone Mall to the west of Johannesburg. The Grove Mall in Pretoria East and most recently, Gateway in Durban.
“We are very proud of this development at our Sandton site, as we continue to bring the very best in cinema entertainment to our audiences across the country. We are committed to giving movie-lovers great moments with every movie experience, and our investment into new sites and upgraded formats, such as here at Sandton, provide further evidence of our determination to deliver on this promise,” says Place.
For instant access to find out what’s new, which films are releasing when, and to make a booking, smart phone users can download the popular SK App on their Nokia, Samsung Android, iPhone or Blackberry smart phones – and have all the information they need at the touch of a button. With tickets at a premium in the exclusive Cine Prestige cinema, advance booking is recommended!
“With the latest blockbusters releasing each week and eleven state-of-the-art digital cinemas – including Cine Prestige – in which to watch them, we are confident that audiences who enjoy a ‘great moment’ at one of our cinemas at Sandton will certainly be back for more,” concludes Place.
