Mary Jane Watson Zendaya

The mystery is solved. Zendaya will play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s love interest in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

When the teen actress first signed on Sony and Marvel Studios were unusually quiet about who she’d be playing. Now The Wrap has provided some much-needed clarity. According to Vulture, Zendaya’s character, Michelle, only confirms her identity towards the end of the film when she finally invites Peter to call her M.J. Kirsten Dunst played the Mary Jane role in the first three Spider-Man films. Zendaya, whose father is African-American and mother is white, would take this character into a racially diverse direction.

Of course, Twitter is exploding with comments on the news and surprisingly, a lot of it is positive.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be set during Peter Parker’s high school career, and in this case, he’ll be a bit younger. Spider-Man: Homecoming is being directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr, Tony Revolori, Laura Harrier, Michael Keaton, Donald Glover and Zendaya, and is set to release in July 2017.
