Many Star Wars fans view Knights of the Old Republic as one of the quintessential Star Wars games out there. For years, rumours of a follow-up have been doing the rounds. Now, it seems fans might be getting the follow-up they’ve always wanted.
During a recent podcast (by The Star Wars Game Outpost), it was revealed by games journalist Liam Robertson that BioWare Austin (who is responsible for the development of The Old Republic Star Wars MMO) is currently working on a “remake/revival” of the Knights of the Old Republic, which was originally released in 2003.
“I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future. I don’t really know how that game’ll end up,” he continued. “I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”
Robertson also mentions that he believes the game would probably not be Knights of the Old Republic 3 but rather a game that could embrace some of the new Star Wars lore. There is some merit to Roberson’s speculation as Drew Karpyshyn, who served as the lead writer on the original Knights of the Old Republic, rejoined BioWare in 2015 and posted on Twitter that he was working on a new project.
Personally, I’d love to see a new BioWare-developed RPG based in the Star Wars universe as I believe that there can never truly have too many great games out there. Here’s hoping we hear more of this rumoured game in the coming months (maybe even at E3 2017).
