Sony revealed the Xperia Tablet Z at CES 2013 way back in January, but was only formally announced at MWC a month later. Sony branded their new tablet as world’s thinnest 10.1-inch tablet.” Measuring a mere 6.9mm thick, one can only appreciate its size once you’ve physically handled one. At a small media gathering at their Sony Store in Vodaworld, Sony Mobile announced the Xperia Tablet Z to the press for the Johannesburg tour (previously being unveiled in Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Durban).

As with the Sony Xperia Z, the 10.1 tablet also offers the same rigidity with its durable glass front display, as well as its dust and water resistant (IP55 & IP57) capabilities. The tablet also features most of the same hardware, namely the CPU and GPU, while there are noticeable inclusions such as the S-Force Front Surround 3D speakers, 10.1” HD 1920x1200p WUXGA Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, 16GB internal storage, 2GB RAM, 8.1MP rear camera and non-removable Li-Po 6000 mAh battery, all of which weighs less than 500g. The Xperia Tablet Z offers Seamless One-touch Connectivity, which integrates with an extended list of devices (not specific to Sony), as well as infrared remote control capabilities.

Sony Mobile will launch the LTE version of the device in the South African market, and is expected to land sometime in July 2013. Sony also stated that the tablet would go on sale for less than R10,000, although a few sites have already popped up taken pre-orders around the R8,500 mark. With its impressive features and elegant design, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z will definitely be on the radar for many.
