If you’ve been banking on a PS3 price cut, we have some bad news… It seems the price of the PlayStation 3 won’t drop when the Sony PS4 lands after all, with the existing console likely to hang around for some years still.
“There’s no plans as yet,” Sony’s boss (Fergal Gara, Managing Direction for SCEE UK) told GamesIndustry.biz when asked about a possible PS3 price cut following the launch of the next-generation PlayStation 4 later this year. “The PlayStation 3 is a system where it hasn’t been particularly easy to get the costs down.”
“It will certainly be a more keenly priced machine in relative to PlayStation 4. It will sit there as a viable entry level machine for years to come. It will be different by territory as to how long its life is. There’s still a lot of love for PS3,” Gara added.

With the PlayStation 4 coming out this year at a $399/€399/£349 cost, it would make sense for the PlayStation 3 to receive a price cut soon. However, the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 bundle launching on September 17th has a price of $299.99, only a little lower than the PS4.
Do you think it’s a good idea for Sony to keep the PS3 at its current price? Or should they drop it soon?
