Samsung Announces the Galaxy S IV

Written by

Since the first release of the first Samsung Galaxy S smartphone in 2010, the company has been releasing its flagship’s successor every year. Rumours had already started doing the rounds within a month of the Galaxy S III being released, with a few more serious specs and photographs released before the close of 2012. Even in the build up to the announcement event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City this week, numerous leaks of the smartphone appeared, featuring specs, hi-res images and a few hands-on videos. The Samsung Galaxy S IV has officially been announced, putting an end to all the rumours, while confirming a few.

Samsung Announces the Galaxy S IV - Angles

Unfortunately for Samsung the secret messenger, a boy known as Jeremy, didn’t manage to keep a lid on things, since the leaked images released earlier this week were pretty much what was expected by many. Unfortunately, this has been the trend of late, as other companies have also suffered in the weeks building up to their respective launch events. Be that as it may, the smartphone is finally here, and although a quick glance at it resembles a slightly larger Galaxy S III, there are a number of small changes to the Galaxy S IV.

Here’s a quick rundown of the specs:

  • 5″ Full HD Super AMOLED, 1920x1080px at 441ppi display (with green PHOLED technology)
  • 1.6GHz Exynos Octa-Core CPU (or 1.9GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm based on region)
  • 2GB DDR3 RAM
  • 13MP rear (1080p), 2MP front (720p), Dual-Camera capture
  • 16/32/64 GB storage, microSD slot (up to 64GB)
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HSPA, LTE, IR LED (Remote Control), MHL 2.0
  • 2,600 mAh battery, wireless charging
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, TouchWiz UI
  • Polycarbonate body at 136.6×69.8×7.9mm, 130g
  • Accelerometer/RGB light/Digital Compass/Proximity/Gyroscope/Barometer/IR sensors
  • Features/Apps: Group Play: Share Music, Share Picture, Share Document, Play Games, Story Album, S Translator, Optical Reader, Samsung Smart Scroll, Samsung Smart Pause, Air Gesture, Air View, Samsung Hub, ChatON, Samsung WatchON, S Travel, S Voice™ Drive, S Health, Samsung Adapt Display, Samsung Adapt Sound, Auto adjust touch sensitivity (Glove friendly), Safety Assistance, Samsung Link, Screen Mirroring, Samsung KNOX
  • Black Mist/White Frost colour options

So now we await the South African release for the Samsung Galaxy S IV, which, if previous years are an indication, will be around the start of May (possibly end of April). There’s no doubting that we can expect the flagship smartphone to be available on all local operators, although contract deals may vary slightly.
